Neue Klasse: What BMW's Next EV Platform Means for Enthusiasts
BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse platform promises a leap forward for EVs, and there's cautious reason for enthusiasts to be excited.
BMW has staked its future on Neue Klasse, an all-new electric architecture that will underpin the next wave of its cars. For enthusiasts who grew up on straight-sixes, the shift to EVs is understandably nerve-wracking, but there are real reasons for cautious optimism.
The headline promises are big: dramatically improved range, faster charging thanks to a new 800-volt system, and a fresh generation of round battery cells said to boost efficiency significantly. If BMW delivers, range anxiety could finally become a non-issue.
More interesting for driving fans is the talk of a completely reworked chassis and a so-called Heart of Joy control unit meant to sharpen dynamics. BMW insists it wants these cars to feel like BMWs first and EVs second, and that philosophy matters.
We are not naive; plenty could go wrong, and no motor will ever replace the sound of an S58 at full chat. But if any brand can make an electric future genuinely fun to drive, it is the one that built the E46 M3. We are watching closely.
