Track Day Basics: Prepping Your BMW for the First Session
A simple checklist covering tires, fluids, brakes, and mindset to get your BMW ready for its first track day.
Your first track day is a rite of passage for any BMW enthusiast, but showing up unprepared can turn excitement into an expensive lesson. A little preparation goes a long way, and most of it comes down to four basics: tires, fluids, brakes, and mindset.
Start with tires. Check that they are in good condition with plenty of tread, and set your pressures a touch lower than street spec since heat will build them up quickly. Then move to fluids: fresh, high-temperature brake fluid is non-negotiable, and topped-up oil and coolant are essential for a car working hard in the heat.
Brakes deserve special attention because they take the most abuse on track. Inspect your pads for plenty of material, look for cracks in the rotors, and consider a more track-focused pad if you plan to attend regularly. Fading brakes are the fastest way to end your day early.
Finally, the most important upgrade is free: your mindset. Go in to learn, not to be a hero. Build speed gradually, leave your ego in the paddock, listen to the instructors, and remember that finishing the day with a smile and an intact car is the real win.
